Mary graduated from Wicomico High School in 1940. On September 6, 1941, she married Charles Burton, and they settled in Montgomery County, Maryland. She and Charles had four children: Nancy, Susan, Mary Ellen, and Sheppard. She was an internationally renowned rug-hooking artist and teacher. Some of her beautiful rugs may be seen at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC.
