John graduated from Marion High School and worked in a variety of manufacturing companies in the Valdese, North Carolina, area.

Simmons was past president of the Valdese Lions Club and was recognized as a Grand Old Monarch for 40 years of service. He served as a County Commissioner, and on many boards including Foster Grandparents, Valdese library, United Way, Old Colony Players, AARP, Boy Scouts of America, Blind Buddys and Camp Dogwood. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a past president and life member of the Burke County Shrine Club.

John Simmons was married to Maude Haynes.

He was also survived by a brother, Kelton Simmons, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
