John was the eldest son of Heinrich and Rosina (Kraft) Paugels. He was born in Elma, NY and moved with his older sister, father, mother and maternal Grandmother to Central Wisconsin. His family settled in Bear Creek, Waupaca, Wisconsin by the 1870 census. They attended the Trinity Lutheran Church, John was confirmed here.

He married Wilhelmine Blank on 23 May 1887 in Neenah, Winnebago, Wisconsin. He resided within or around Waupaca County until circa 1900. The family then moved and resided in the Taylor County area. John and his wife Minnie lived in Taylor county exclusively until her death in 1937. After her death John did spend some time living in Freeport, Stephenson, IL with his sons Henry and Emil. However he spent the last few years of his life living with his daughter Minnie Clarkson and passed away in her home in Medford, Wisconsin
