Miss Susan Affleck, a daughter of the late James Affleck, who resided on Centreville avenue in this city, met a horrible death in St. Louis Sunday morning. Miss Affleck, since the death of her parents, has been residing in St. Louis, where she was employed as a stenographer in the office of Rassieur & Rassieur, attorneys.

Miss Affleck was engaged Sunday morning in making her preparations to attending church when a bottle of gasoline used by her, exploded and she was burned so badly that she died at the City Hospital a few hours later. The girl was alone in her room at 3633 Pine street about 9 o'clock, when the explosion took place, and before aid arrived she had been severely burned about the face and body. Miss Affleck had a bottle filled with gasoline and was cleaning a ribbon with the fluid, when she struck a match to light the gas. The flame came in contact with the gasoline, causing an explosion, and the burning gasoline was thrown over the girl, igniting her dress. Retaining her presence of mind Miss Affleck ran to the bed and rolled herself in the covers and thus succeeded in extinguishing the flames.

Roomers in the house, hearing her screams, rushed to her room, but Miss Affleck had fainted and remained unconscious for some time. She was taken at once to the City Hospital, where her injuries were dressed, but she died in a few hours. The burning fluid set fire to the carpet in the room and smoke issuing from the windows caused an alarm of fire to be turned in. The flames were extinguished with about $10 loss.

Miss Affleck was 23 years old [note headstone shows she was 30] and had a large circle of friends here. Mrs. Alonzo Wilderman of this city is a sister of the deceased. Besides her, she leaves her brothers, Benjamin Affleck in St. Louis, and Edward Affleck, a chief engineer on the battleship "Hartford."

The untimely death of Miss Affleck, who enjoyed the esteem of a large circle of friends in this city, is a severe blow to every one who knew her. The deceased was a prepossessing and accomplished young lady and was endowed with the faculty of making friends with all with whom she came in contact.

The remains will arrive here Tuesday, and the interment will take place Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock to Green Mount Cemetery.
