US Navy Veteran (1898-1928), Spanish American War and World War I. During the Spanish American War he was a machinist mate 2cl on USFS New York, flagship of Admiral William Sampson.

He was the son of John and Anna Affleck and born in Belleview, IL. He enlisted in the Navy on April 28, 1898. Per his father's obituary in 1902, Edward was machinist on the USS Oregon and weeks before his father's death at 87, 31-year old Edward lost both his wife and son. He remarried to Maude Hodges on December 10, 1904 at Manhattan, NY. They had two children, Ruth Eugenia (b. 1907) and James Rudolph (b. 1910). Edward lost his second wife to the Spanish Influenza in 1918. Per the 1920 Census, he was living with his sister in law, Emma, his two children and several male borders at Philadelphia.

Edward retired from the Navy with 30 years service on December 31, 1928. That year he applied for a merchant marine officer's license. Per the 1930 Census, his two children were living with their maternal aunt Emma in Philadelphia, and Edward was apparently at sea with the merchant marine. Edward died at San Francisco in November 1939 at the age of 68. His last residence address was at 45 Laskie St. in San Francisco. His brother, Benjamin, of Winnetka, IL, made the funeral arrangements.
