Mr. Bev Hobbs, 96, of Cannon, passed away Wednesday morning, January 4, 2017 at the Barbourville ARH Hospital. He was a son of the late Demps and Elvia Deaton Hobbs born on February 2, 1920 at Green Road.

Mr. Hobbs was a retired coal miner and a member of the Friendship Baptist Church. Years ago he could often be found at the courthouse trading knives and enjoyed Ginsenging and hunting. Mr. Hobbs began his career in the United States Army on June 18, 1942 and served until September 27, 1945. During that time, he served in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, and fought many battles in both Germany and into Czechoslovakia. He was a highly decorated veteran, earning many medals including the Theater Ribbon with four bronze stars, good conduct ribbon, a purple heart and was bestowed a distinguished unit citation.

In 1951, he united in marriage with Connie White in Pineville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Connie Hobbs; a son, Irvin Hobbs; a sister, Della Hightower; four brothers, Reed, Calloway, Willie and Robert Hobbs; and a son-in-law, Ray Chambers.

Survivors include his children, Joyce Engle and husband, Ray, of Paynes Creek, Maureen Jones and husband, Don, of Green Road, Sandra Riley of Cannon, Jan Chambers of Hamilton, OH, Linda Hobbs of London and Teresa Hobbs of Mt. Vernon; a son-in-law, David Lewis of London; two sisters, Dora Beyersdorfer of Richmond, VA and Flora Weaver of New Port Richey, FL; numerous grandchildren, great children and great-great grandchildren; among other loved ones and dear friends.

His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Saturday, January 7 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Owen Smith, Rev. Eli Broughton and Michael Broughton officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Hammons Cemetery at Green Road with military funeral honors.

Casket bearers will be Donald Jones, Jamey Jones, Cody Brown, Dylan Miller, Jerry Smith, Charles Miles, James Merida and Edward Riley. Honorary bearers will be Ronnie, Randy and David Engle.

Friends may call at the funeral home Friday between 6 and 9 P.M. and Saturday prior to the funeral hour.
