The son of James & Margaret S. (Clark) Black, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Little Britain Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chestnut Level, Lancaster County, July 4, 1863, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg as a private with Co. G, 1st Pennsylvania (Ramsey's) Battalion of Infantry Militia, and honorably discharged with his company January 9. 1864.

He married Anna Mary Rea in 1875 and fathered the children you see linked below plus Robert (b. @1889). Cause of William's death is listed as "apoplexy."
