He was the son of Sir John Lee of Coton Hall and wife Joyce Romney. He was baptized at Alveley church on Oct. 6, 1563, as noted in the church registers. He married Elizabeth Bendy in 1586. He was the grandfather of Richard Lee the Immigrant who came to Virginia and founded the famed Lees of Virginia.

He was originally buried in the 13th century chapel at Coton Hall. In 1878 the chapel roof collapsed and all the Lee monuments were moved to Alveley church.
