Dr. Leonard D. Goranson, 93, of Havana, Ill., formerly of Eau Claire, died Monday, April 10, 2006, at the Mason District Hospital in Havana.

He was born August 25, 1912, in Joliet, Ill., the son of David and Amanda Magnuson Goranson. He married Edith Melander on June 20, 1942, in Duluth, Minn. She passed away January 13, 2000.

Dr. Goranson was a member of Grace Baptist Church in the village of Lake Hallie and attended the Havana Church of Christ. He earned a Dr. of Divinity from Bethel Seminary in St. Paul, Minn. He began his career as pastor of the Methodist Church in North Branch, Minn. He later served the Bethany Baptist Church in Iowa City, Iowa.

As his career progressed, he earned both a master's degree and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa at Iowa City in geography. Dr. Goranson retired in 1983 after many years teaching — first at Southern States Teacher's College in Magnolia, Ark., and lastly as professor emeritus at UW-EC. He was a veteran of WW II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was drafted on VE Day and served with the occupation forces in Germany.

He is survived by two daughters, Kathy Chave of Havana, Ill., and Carol (Ray) Muller of Bertha, Minn.; one son, Dr. Kenneth (Kerrie) Goranson of Los Altos Hills, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

His parents and his wife preceded him in death.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, April 14, at Grace Baptist Church in the village of Lake Hallie, with Pastor Brian Jahn officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, Eau Claire.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be designated to Grace Baptist Church or to the Med/Surg. Unit of Mason District Hospital in Havana.
