Odell Sep Smith
Odell Sep Smith of Portales, formerly of Rogers, passed away while visiting family members in McKinney, Texas on Dec. 2. The son of Oliver Columbus and Betty Smith, Odell was born in Bailey County, Texas on Oct. 21, 1913. While playing basketball at Rogers, he was a member of the State Championship team and held the New Mexico High School shot put record for over thirty years. After finding the love of his life, Odell married Una Harris of Rogers in 1934. They started farming and ranching, while establishing one of the first dairy parlors in the county. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Portales, an active member of the county serving on the Rogers and Dora School Boards, County Commissioner, Farm Bureau, Deputy Sheriff, Sheriff, a member of the Woodsmen of the World and Odd Fellow organizations. He served his community with passion, integrity, and possessed a real love for helping people. His interests included sports, hunting, fishing, camping and family.
He survived by his wife, Una of Portales; brother Rex Smith of Farmington, N.M.; daughters and son-in-laws Laverne and Holt Irby of Garland, Texas, Louise Smith of McKinney, Doris and Gerald Devault of Lubbock; son and daughter-in-law Derrell and Jody Smith of Waco; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, four sisters and his son-in-law, Billy Ray Smith.
Pallbearers will be grandsons: Joe Irby of Garland, Billy Smith of Richardson, Jim Irby of Garland, Gregg Devault of Bartlett, Texas, Kendall Devault of Farwell, Texas, Chad Smith and Scott Smith of Waco.
Viewing and family visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Dec. 6, at Wheeler Mortuary in Portales. Services will be at 1 p.m. on Dec. 7 at the First Baptist Church of Portales, with Dr. Herbert Bergstrom and Dr. Philip Fike officiating. Burial will follow at the Portales Cemetery.
