"A SCRAP OF NAPLES HISTORY"

In 1828 Joseph Clark erected the first tavern (such was the name at an early day given to such places of entertainment), at the lake, on about the same ground that is occupied by the present hotel. At that time there was only just room enough to put the building, for after it was finished the water of the lake came close up to a part of the piazza. A steamer at the same time was being built at the other end of the lake, to be called "The Lady of the Lake," by a company in Canandaigua, and it was run by Captain Isaac Parrish. The captain's father had been taken a prisoner among the Indians, living with them a number of years, until finally he became a resident of Canandaigua, and was the interpreter for the people in this section when they had any business with the Indians.
