Mr. and Mrs. E.S. Sears Observe Golden Wedding
Celebrate the reaching of the Half Century Mark of Married Life.
Worthy Couple Among the Pioneers of Racine County-Husband Came Here from Massachusetts 60 Years Ago.

Fifty years ago today, March 30, 1854, Mr. Esek S. Sears and Miss Esther F. Olin were united in marriage in the town of Caledonia. It is the event of their golden wedding, an occasion few couples are spared to enjoy. Quietly they celebrated the half century mark of married life at their comfortable home on Northwestern avenue. Relatives and intimate friends called to pay their respects and assist in making the reception a pleasant one. Flowers in profusion were conspicuous in the parlors and although well advanced in years, Mr. and Mrs. Sears were alert to the important event, in fact happy and unusually lively. Mr. Sears is one of the very earliest pioneers of the county, having come here from Ashfield, Mass., over sixty years ago. He was born at that place on January 11, 1815. When he came to the west the country was wild and a wilderness, but he took land in the thickest of the forest, cleared away the timber and erected a log cabin. March 30, 1854, he took unto himself Miss Esther F. Olin as wife and helpmate. Weddings in those days were not elaborate affairs, and this one was simple. The bride shared the log cabin and its few comforts, assisting her husband to build up a home. Time ran on and the privations of early days were hard for the young couple, but they witnessed the rapid development of the country. A very handsome brick structure took the place of the log cabin and Mr. and Mrs. Sears enjoyed their home they had worked so hard to establish. On this farm they lived until some fifteen years ago when it was sold and they came to Racine and have lived a retired life since. No children were born to them. Mr. and Mrs. Sears are among the oldest pioneers of the county, have always been honored and respected for their kindness and were never found lacking when assistance was deserved to the poor and unfortunate. The Journal extends its congratulations as will the hundreds of friends of the couple, upon the occasion of their golden anniversary and hope they may live to enjoy the diamond wedding. -- Racine Journal, Apr.1,1904--Added by Donald Kosterman FAG Member 48201466.
