Major League Baseball Player. For six seasons (1948 to 1953), he played at the outfielder and first baseman positions with the Philadelphia Phillies. Born John Lewis Mayo, he was raised in Youngstown, Ohio, where he attended Rayen High School. He served with the United States Marine Corps during World War II and later played collegiate baseball at the University of Notre Dame. Signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent in 1947, he went on to play in 139 regular season games. Mayo experienced a pennant-winning season as a member of the Phillies' squad known as the "Whiz Kids," who captured the National League Pennant in 1950. He recorded a base-on-balls during the 1950 World Series. In 1952, he produced a career-high 29 hits while playing in 50 games that season. After retiring from baseball, he established a successful real estate business.
