D MARTIN
Redwood City Democrat
March 31, 1904
The third victim of the railroad last week was a section hand named Ed Martin, whose body was found near the track at Belmont, Wednesday night. The position of the body indicated that he was killed by the train, although there were marks on his body showing injuries severe enough to have caused death and it is presumed that he died of shock and fright.
Deputy Coroner Booth of San Mateo summoned a jury and held an inquest which exonerated the railroad company from blame.
Martin had been employed by the railroad company for the past three months. He had just been paid off by check valued at $27.20. Some figures on a card he had showed that $12.00 of this sum had been paid out, presumably for board. When the body was found, there was neither money nor check on his person. These facts, in the whole condition of the man's body, aroused some suspicion of foul play.
He was 46 years of age and was born in France, Emile Martin.
The body was unclaimed and was buried Saturday by Coroner Crowe in Union Cemetery.
