Joseph was a son of Jean Theobald Spetz (1782-1847) and Mary Ann Haehner (1793-1856).

The family immigrated from Alsace France to North America in 1828. They arrived in New York on Aug. 29, 1828. They headed up the Erie Canal to Buffalo.

While living in Buffalo, Joseph married Anna Herres on June 13, 1845. Shortly after they went north & settled in Waterloo Twp in Upper Canada. There they raised 9 children.
