OBITUARY: John W. MAY
SOURCE: Minutes, Bogue Chitto Baptist Church (on file at Mississippi College, Clinton MS), 2 Feb 1899
On the morning of March 2, 1904, the spirit of this good many went home to God. He had been in failing health for twenty years. So that when the last attack came, the faithful attention of the physician and tender ministries of his dear wife were unavailing in keeping back the angel of death.
Bro. May was born December the 9th, 1849, on his 20th year he united with McGee Creek Baptist Church. In later life he moved into the neighborhood of the Bogue Chitto Baptist Church, with which he placed his membership and continued a
member of the same in good standing to the day of his death.
On July the 18th, 1872, he was married to Mrs. Rebecca Cothern Cooper. To this union were born seven children, six of whom with their mother survived. For fifty four years, two months and twenty three days, this brother met life in its varied changes of sunshine and shadow. The poor health that was his lot for so long, would naturally cause shadows to come over the light of a happy heart. But the sunshine of his soul was his love of the Saviour, who he honored and adored in his Christian walk. He never seemed more happy than when conversing upon some religious theme. He longed for rest, that sweet rest that would come to his aching body and tired heart. He was conscious of death's approach and was fully resigned. Death came peacefully, as one who falls asleep and now he rests. He has made the voyage over life's storm tossed sea and has anchored in the eternal
calm. He fought life's last battle and heard the shouts of Victory from the heavenly host. He has gone to be with Jesus his great Commander, his Leader, and his Saviour.
Let us who remain be encouraged to press on in the work of our Lord, so that when the throbbing drums of our life shall cease to beat and the battle flag of our conflict shall be furled, we shall rest with the company of the Redeemer forever.
To the aged mother, the sister and brother, the wife and children, we extend our sympathy and offer our prayer in their behalf praying God to bless them and thy home, and the church from whose ranks our brother has been taken. The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away, bless be the name of the Lord.
