Mrs. Elmira Pennar, who came to Carlos township in 1866, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Gris, on January 5, 1938 at 4:30 p.m., being at the time of her death 85 years and 10 days. She had been bedridden for the past four years. Mrs. Pennar was born in Wisconsin March 5, 1852. She grew to womanhood near Carlos, being one of the earliest settlers of Carlos township. She was united in marriage to Joseph Pennar on April 18, 1868 at Alexandria. Mr. Pennar was a rural mail carrier and they continued to make their home here. He preceded her in death 27 years ago. For the past five years she has made her home with her daughter. Eight children were born to this union, six of whom survive: Mary (Mrs. Albert Bacon) of Staples, William of LaPorte, Minn., Alexander of Sacramento, Calif., Mattie (Mrs. John Geris) of Carlos, Maude (Mrs. Charlie Swanson) of Pelican Rapids and Garfield of Alexandria. Ralph and Bernice have preceded her in death. Surviving also are 28 grandchildren and 44 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Mrs. Pennar was a kind and loving mother and a friend of all who knew her. Funeral services were held on Sunday, January 9 at 1:30 from the Anderson Funeral Home; Rev. C. E. Hansen officiating. The pallbearers were Thos. Pennar, Robert Pennar, Richard Brophy, Jack Geris, Howard Johnson and Glen Nyberg. Burial was in the Carlos cemetery, which at one time was her father's farm, where she grew up.
