KAREN S. CASEY, age 75, of Kendallville died on Monday, November 17, 2014 at Parkview Noble Hospital in Kendallville.

She was born in Bicknell, Indiana on April 9, 1939 to Herbert and Helen (Brashear) Lawton.

Karen graduated from Bicknell High School in 1957 where she had been a state champion in algebra. She then graduated from Indiana State University in Terre Haute with a Bachelor of Science degree. Later she graduated from University of St. Francis in Fort Wayne with a Master’s in Education degree.

She worked as a teacher for 32 years for several different school corporations. She taught at Kokomo High School, Avilla High School, Kendallville High School, DeKalb High School, Antwerp High School and East Noble High School before retiring from Kendallville Central Middle School in 1995. She loved her students and influenced countless lives during her career.

Karen was a member of the Destiny Family of Faith Church in Kendallville. She was also a member and past president of the Kendallville Garden Club where she earned her Master Gardener designation, member and past president of the Kendallville Housing Authority and a member of the Psi Iota Xi sorority. She was also once named Indiana Citizen of the Year during the 1990’s.

Karen enjoyed traveling, especially to Mexico and the Carribean. She was an animal lover and enjoyed fishing. Karen was an avid Indianapolis Colts and high school football fan. She also enjoyed politics. Through the years she worked on several local and state campaigns. She liked to stay competitive and learned to love playing poker, where she was known to those who played with her as “the Rock”. More than anything she loved spending time with her family! From cooking Thanksgiving and Easter dinners to watching her grandkids play sports, she was happiest with her family. In fact many knew her as Mimi and Mamma Casey.

Survivors include:
Daughter; Cheryl and Chris Ramsay of Kendallville.
Son; Darrell W. and Cheryl Casey of Kendallville.
Daughter; Jenni and Brian Ritchie of Kendallville.
Eight grandchildren; Holly and Joe Smith, Ryan Ramsay, Taylor Ramsay, Austin Ramsay, Madison Brayton, Noah Brayton, Nick Ritchie and Josh Ritchie.
Five great grandchildren; Haylee Wicker, Kayne Wicker, Danika Gross, Allison Smith and Alex Smith.
Three step-grandchildren; Chris and Beth Heimann, Melinda and Johnny Squire and Caryn and David Thompson.
Ten step-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be Thursday, November 20, 2014 from 2:00 to 7:00 PM at Hite Funeral Home, 403 South Main Street in Kendallville. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the funeral service on Friday.

Funeral services will be Friday, November 21, 2014 at 1:00 PM at Hite Funeral Home.

Officiating the funeral service will be Pastor Mike Albaugh of Destiny Family of Faith Church.

Burial will be at Lake View Cemetery in Kendallville, Indiana.

Preferred memorials may be made to Noble County Humane Society, 1305 Sherman Street, Kendallville, Indiana 46755.
