Louis Rowland Roberts, age 92, of Callao, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2014 at Loch Haven Nursing Home in Macon with his family by his side.

Louis Rowland was born April 8, 1922 in Callao, Missouri, the youngest son of Charlie Ross and Lena Leace Roberts.

Rowland was raised in Callao, as a teenager he lived in South Bend, Indiana with his uncle Luther and aunt Alma Roberts, where he worked for several years until joining the army.

He was inducted into the army on November 23, 1942 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He was assigned to the 94th division, Company H 376th Infantry, and 2nd Platoon. During WWII he was assigned to General Patton’s 3rd Army. He spent time at Campholz Woods, Sins, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and many other battles. Rowland was wounded in a small town after they took the town of Ludwigshafen. He was awarded the Purple Heart, four Campaign Stars, Bronze Star, Expert Infantry Badge, Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Ribbon, and many other ribbons. He was discharged in October 4, 1945 with rank of Staff Sergeant, Section Leader. He was very proud of his military service and had many stories to tell about his experiences.

He was an avid farmer and gardener, member of the Callao Christian Church, Callao American Legion Post #360, D.A.V. and served in many community organizations. He loved spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, and arrowhead hunting.

On July 12, 1945 he married Jayne Gayle Gilstrap in Macon, MO. He is survived by his wife, two children, Rick Roberts (Joyce) of Callao, MO and Janna Roberts Craig (Jay) of Griggsville, Illinois, son-in-law, James Brennan of Excello. Nine grandchildren, Troy Coffman of Missouri, Lynn Reid (Dale) of Excello, MO, Josh Craig (Julie), Jill Buchanan (Corey), and Gayla Risley (Lance) all of Griggsville, IL, Tara Roberts Eppy of Ashland, Kara Cook (Mike) of Callao, Kalena Bingaman (Jared) of Highland, IL and Ross Roberts (Alyssa Peterson) of Callao, MO. 14 great grandchildren, 3 inherited grandchildren, 10 inherited great grandchildren and 2 inherited great-great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Erva and Marvin Roberts, 1 sister, Neta Roberts Baker, 2 children who passed in infancy and Nancy Lee Roberts Brennan who passed in 2011.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am, Saturday, November 22, 2014, at the Callao Christian Church in Callao with Bro. Josh Stucki officiating. Burial will be at Locust Grove Cemetery in Callao. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, Friday, November 21, 2014 at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Macon. Family suggest in lieu of flowers, memorials made to Tri-County Christian School in Macon or Hospice Compassus.
