III. The area is almost on the Hancock County line, said a spokesman for the Washington County Sheriff's Department. Lang said the body was found at 4:30 p.m. The sheriff's department said the call came in at 3 p.m.
Lang said Durden and his sister had been in the Friendship area Tuesday morning digging cedar trees. Durden returned to the area by himself Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Durden's sister found the body when she went back to find out why Durden had not returned home, Lang said.
Durden, 47, of 137 Allen Memorial Drive, came into contact with a wire that was draped over a 14,400 volt power line, Lang Said. It hasn't been determined if Durden stepped on the wire or if the wire was attached to Durden's leg, Lang Said.
When Durden's body was found, the wire was lying close to his left leg, Lang said. The wire was draped over a power line that was approximately 20-25 feet above the body, he said. Lang said a rock or some type of weight was attached to the end of the wire which was draped over the power line.
Lang said Dr. Larry Howard of the State Crime Lab was conducting an autopsy Wednesday afternoon. He did not know when the results would be availablle.
Durden was originally from Washington County, but he moved to Baldwin County in his teens. He was a security supervisor for American McGaw before becoming a deputy with the Baldwin County Sheriff's Department in 1977. He resigned in 1984 to run for sheriff, but was defeated.
Afterwards he worked as an animal control officer for Baldwin County. He was most recently employed at the Milledgeville Youth Development center. Durden is survived by a wife and five children.
The funeral services for William Durden, 47, will be held at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Martin's Funeral Home. The Rev. James Nipper will officiate. Burial will take place at Friendship Baptist Church in Washington County.
