Virginia Beach - Eric Preston Yates, Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War, died peacefully in his sleep on Veterans Day, November 11, 2014. After completing his Naval Service, he organized and managed multiple retail clothing businesses in Myrtle Beach and Virginia Beach, one of which survives today as the Bahama Shop at Hilltop. He then retired from business and devoted his time and excellent writing skills to the love of his life, Sports: horses, football, baseball, basketball, golf, tennis, and any other athletic genre with a competitive twist. A fierce competitor himself, he taught tennis and was seeking the Over Seventy championship when he fell ill. He became the family author and sports encyclopedia when Sammy Baugh shook his hand and signed his program at a Redskins pre-game breakfast at the 14th Street Marriott Motel. He is survived and sorely missed by his daughter, Stephanie Kelly Yates, of Portland, OR, his four siblings Susan, Philip, George, and Abbey, his many cousins, nieces, nephews, and his father RADM Yates.
