Lucy Anne Welch Yates, born in Fort Totten, NY on July 10, 1923 to Lt. Richard Ogle Welch, U.S. Army, and Lucy Abbey Welch, died on November 8, 2007 while hospitalized in Virginia Beach, VA. She grew up in Annapolis, MD, where she lived an enchanted childhood, crabbing, fishing, and sailing on the Magothy and Severn Rivers. During her teens she became widely acclaimed as a Regimental Sweetheart of the U.S. Naval Academy, and at age 18 she met her future husband of 64 years, RADM Earl P. Yates, USN (ret), then a Midshipman, class of '44. She excelled as a Navy Wife, particularly in her roles of ombudsman and mother hen for the young wives of her husband's crews serving overseas.

Her generosity and passions for children, cooking, gardening, sailing, and pets blended together as a mother, dearly loved by her own children and their many friends. Her five children; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren all survive her passing. She adored each of them with great pride and deep understanding.

Her children and their spouses, Eric P. Yates of Virginia Beach, VA, Susan Stephenson of Raleigh, NC and her husband, Russell, Philip Yates of Oregon City, OR and his wife, Vicki, George Yates of Virginia Beach, VA and his wife, Courtney, Abbey Yates of Virginia Beach and Charlottesville, VA; her grandchildren, Kelly Yates, Anne Huitt, Emily Bing, Betsy Yates, Preston Yates, Rachel Yates; and three step-grandchildren, Harriet Stephenson, Lee Stephenson, and Chloe Rawson; her great-grandchildren, Lucy Huitt, Benjamin Huitt, Preston Huitt, Scottie Bing, and Abbey Bing.

RADM Yates resides in Virginia Beach.

The funeral will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at the Naval Academy Chapel in Annapolis, MD.

The family will host a visitation between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening, November 13, 2007 at the H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., 2002 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, VA.
