Major League Baseball Player. The outfielder was a consistent performer and even tied the Boston Red Sox's Babe Ruth for the American League home run title with 11 in 1918. He led the league four times in assists (30 in 1914, 27 in 1915, 25 in 1918 and 26 in 1920) and three times in errors (23 in 1915, 19 in 1919 and 23 in 1920). He played for the Washington Senators in 1911 and 1912 before being sold to St. Louis in October 1912. He was with the Browns from 1913 to 1915. He hit .298 with 24 doubles, 16 triples, 78 runs batted in and 29 stolen bases in 1914. Getting ready to trade disenchanted center fielder Tris Speaker, Boston purchased him on April 18, 1916, and he played for the Red Sox in 1916 and 1917. He got into three games of the 1916 World Series against Brooklyn and hit .273 (3 for 11) as the Red Sox prevailed in five games. The Philadelphia Athletics acquired him along with third baseman Larry Gardner and catcher Hick Cady on January 10, 1918 for first baseman Stuffy McInnis, the last player in the Connie Mack's famed $100,000 infield. He batted .295 with 20 doubles for the A's in 1918, then hit .304 with 32 doubles, 23 homers and a career-high 101 RBIs in 1921. The right-handed hitter batted .283 in 1922 with 32 doubles, a career-high 37 homers (two behind St. Louis' Ken Williams), 99 RBIs and 111 runs scored. He played for the A's through the 1923 season and finished his 13-year career with a .281 average, 244 doubles, 71 triples, 118 homers, 679 RBIs and 130 stolen bases. He was 17 for 59 as a pinch hitter (.288). He also wound up with 222 assists.
