Leendert Schakel sailed on the ship Pieter Floris from Amsterdam, Holland in early April 1847 He and his family were listed as passenders in the book: "Souvenir History of Pella, Iowa."

He married Aaltje Visser who also sailed on the same ship with her family.

They had 11 children, as told by Olive Schakel their granddaughter and she spelled the names as they would have been spelled in Holland. Mennekas; Willem; Gertrude; Johannes (died in infancy); John Arie; Martin; Johanne Mary; Tunie; Peter Nellie; Luke; Gradie (died at age 11).

Al Hibbard requested I add this Obituary: Leendert Schakel died Saturday, August 29, 1914, at his home just southwest of Pella from heart trouble. At the time of his death he was aged 75 years, 8 months and 27 days. He leaves a wife and a large family of sons and daughters. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a. m., Monday, Aug. 31, at the home conducted by Rev. H. DeHaaii and Rev. Mr. Gordon of Indianola. Interment was at Oakwood.
