After graduation from high school in 1917, Robert worked with a tiling crew in the Pella area. Then he worked in the Lacey Lumberyard. In 1921, Robert was appointed as manager of the Otley Cooperative. Robert married Mintie Van der Garde on 13 October 1923 at the First Reformed Church parsonage, by Pastor John Wesselink. In addition to full-time employment at the Co-op, the family kept a few milk cows and chickens on their Otley town lot and a nearby pasture. Their chickens won many ribbons at different fairs and chicken shows. The price of hatching eggs was one dollar per egg. The eggs were guaranteed to hatch; if not, replacements could be purchased at one-half price.
In 1937, multifever forced him to resign from his manager's postion. Since they couldn't sell their house, they moved it from Otley to an 80 acre farm located one-half mile east of Otley. After that Robert farmed, managed farms, and sold real estate. In 1953 Robert moved to 808 Independence Street, Pella, Iowa.
On 13 October 1973, Robert and Mintie celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Most of the relatives and many friends attended the open house held in the Legion Hall, Pella. Their children: Ronald Elwin born 2 May 1939; Mary Minnetta born 3 September 1942. Robert passed away 20 April 1980 and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Pella, Iowa.
