About 1838 grandfather died. He went out to get some kindling a few rods from the house. We missed him and followed his track in the snow and found him laying speechless. He lived a few days and died of paralysis. He had been stricken some years before while crossing a ferry 25 or 30 miles from home. It was some weeks before we heard from him. Finally we brought him home and he recovered. He was a man of great physical strength so also was many of his kindred.
