Marianne Hofmann, 89, passed away Monday, June 22, 2009, her family by her side.

Marianne was born the youngest of four children on May 21, 1920, in Pompeys Pillar, to Eleanor and Richard Sanderson. Her family homesteaded in the Bull Mountains, moving to Billings before Marianne began to attend grade school.

She attended Rimrock Grade School and later Billings High School, where she met Edward "Bud" Hofmann. They married in 1940 and had two children, Fred and Jill. They later divorced.

She began her career at Petroleum Information in 1955. It was uncommon for women to be working in the oil business at that time. Undeterred, she worked her way up and retired as a district manager in 1985.

Marianne had a special knack for "shopping the sales" and keen memory. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, collecting, playing bridge, working crossword puzzles and decorating her yard with rocks and other trinkets.

Marianne had many interests in life, but her greatest passion was her family. She loved big family dinners and breakfast at the Alpine. Whether it was frying chicken every Sunday for the family dinner at the "farm," the nickel and penny money hunts and elaborate Santa present hunts at Christmas for the grandkids or the little gifts and goodies she would have to give the great-grandchildren every holiday and family get-together, she was always at the center of the heart of the family. She had a wonderful sense of humor and strong and spunky spirit.

Her great-grandchildren called her Grandma Great-Great, and she was great! It was a milestone for the grandkids and great-grandkids to measure back to back with her and find they were taller.

Marianne is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Donna Hofmann; her grandchildren, Amber Field, Chris (Robin) Hofmann, Nisa Caskey and Tana (Phil) Kornachuk; her nine great-grandchildren, Morgan, Noah, Kelsie, Lily, Cade, Katadin, Breckyn, Quinn and Taigan; and her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Jill Caskey.

Cremation has taken place and no services are scheduled. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society. Smith Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

We will miss your butterfly kisses and hugs!
