Penny Lynn Norton Hatch Healey, age 67, passed away November 6, 2014 in Furnace Creek, California from long term severe, heart complications.

She was born February 16, 1947 in Pioche, Nevada to David Dee Norton and Lola Louise Yates. She married James Leo Anderson in Mapleton, Utah on June 1, 1964. She later divorced, and remarried Jay Martell Healey in Lindon, Utah on November 3, 1983.

Penny was brought home to an older brother and sister, Larry and Vicky. Her family moved to Park City, Utah. They lived there until her father’s untimely death in the Silver King Mine when she was almost 5 years old. Her mother remarried Robert Kine Hatch in 1951, and soon two more siblings joined the family, Bobbie Kae and Kyne.

Penny attended Provo High school and graduated from American Fork High school, where she excelled in her studies. Music is and has always been her joy and passion (second only to her family.) She was drum majorette and later performed with a symphony on the timpani drums as a young mother. Penny has performed with many country western, folk, and jazz musicians and performers. She plays the piano, percussion instruments, guitar, violin, bass guitar, and bass fiddle.

Penny is an avid learner and obtained several college degrees. She has an associate’s degree in Business Management, a Bachelor’s degrees in criminal justice (major emphasis,) in psychology (minor emphasis.) She is the only woman to qualify for and certify as a Pitman in the Open Hearth furnaces at the Geneva Steel plant In Orem Utah. She was a Journeyman and a crane operator. She worked short term as a flagman for city road construction. She was the first and only woman to work as a garbage collector for Orem City Corporation; lifting more than 150 pound containers at each stop, emptying them into her truck, which she operated by herself.

She was recognized for “The Grassroots Leadership Award” in 1992 for being a facilitator for the Women in Apprenticeships Program at Utah Valley Community College; now known as Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.

She worked at the Utah State Prison for four years while finishing up her college degrees; she worked exclusively in the men’s facilities. She became a Category 1 Peace Officer and passed all the testing, including physical agility, for that position. Her job involved supervising 140 parolees and or probationers. She worked with judges, attorneys, peace officers and victims. She is loved by many of her parolees and is attributed to changing many lives. In 2000 she retired from the Utah State Department of Corrections.

In 2001 Jay and Penny moved from Lindon, Utah to St. George, Utah, where she and Jay served two years in the LDS temple. They also worked in the Bishops Storehouse and cannery on a service mission for the last three years.

For 13 years Penny and Jay performed at the Death Valley ‘49ers Celebration. She was doing the same thing this year, celebrating, singing, performing, and enjoying the association of her friends.

A viewing will be held in St. George on Thursday, November 13, 2014 from 6-8 PM at Pine View Mortuary 566 North Mall Drive St. George, Utah. A viewing will also be held in Pleasant Grove, Utah, at the LDS Timpanogos Stake Center on Saturday, November 15, 2014 from 10:30-11:30am. Funeral services will follow in the same LDS Chapel at 845 North 100 West Pleasant Grove, Utah at 12 noon. Interment will be in the Santaquin, Utah Cemetary, under the direction of Pine View Mortuary and Olpin Mortuary.
