Andrew J. Monroe, 86 Years Old, Succumbs Today in Washington Township
HAD OPERATED CAVE MILL
Shelby county lost one of its best known pioneer residents today, with the death of Andrew J. Monroe, eighty-six years old, at his home in Washington township, three miles south east of Flat Rock. His death occurred at 1:30 o'clock this morning and was due to senility, following a month's illness.
Mr. Monroe had been a farmer most of his life, but had operated the Flat Rock Cave mill for twenty-five years. He was born in Noble township on November 5, 1846, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Monroe. His first marriage to Miss Caroline Maple, took place on September 15, 1872. Of five children born to them, four survive; Elzy Monroe, of Richmond, Indiana; Jesse A. Monroe, of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Frank [Oma] Munson, of Noble township. Mrs. Monroe died February 22, 1897, and on July 8, 1900, Mr. Monroe was married for the second time to Miss Linnie Deiwert. Four of the five children born to this marriage are now living. They are; Mrs. Walter [Esther] Mann, of Indianapolis; Lloyd and Ralph, also of Indianapolis, and Eugene Monroe, at home.
Nineteen grandchildren and twenty-nine great grandchildren also survive, in addition to a sister, Mrs. Eliza Farmer, of Tipton County.
Mr. Monroe was the oldest living member of the Masonic lodge at Waldron and the oldest Past Master of that lodge. He attended the Winchester M. E. church.
The funeral services will be held at that church Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. The Rev. Ed Burkher, assister by the Rev. Mr. Riley, will conduct the rites and burial will be in the family lot in the Forest Hill cemetery, in charge of Morris H. Sleeth, funeral director.
