Hugh Calvin Campbell was born near Shelocta in Indiana County, Pennsylvania on Feb. 25, 1856. He was the son of Alexander and Sarah Ramsey Campbell. In 1866 he moved to Alamakee County, Iowa with his parents and brothers Alexander Johnston, Samuel and William. His father had moved to Iowa in order to purchase farm land for each of his sons. Hugh Calvin married Margaret Jane Leas December 16, 1879. Margaret's father, Jeremiah Leas, owned a large farm near the Campbell family's farms. His brother, Samuel , married his wife's younger sister, Mary Elizabeth Leas. When Mary Campbell died at age 27, leaving two young sons, Hugh Calvin and Margaret Jane Campbell helped raise their nephews Melvin and Alexander Campbell for several months. Hugh Calvin and Margaret Jane Campbell had one daughter, Mamie, whom they adopted. Hugh Calvin lived in the Rossville area until his death November 3, 1938.
