Brownie Oechsner, 82, was good with numbers

Brownie Oechsner was one of those people who was good with numbers and who was always willing to help out.

In a small community like Gallatin County, that meant she was always being called on to keep the books of one organization or another. And in Mrs. Oechsner's case, she almost always said "yes."

So she was treasurer of the March of Dimes and the Cross County Homemakers and the Gallatin County Life Squad. For the last-named organization, she volunteered to be treasurer when it started in the late 1970s and didn't give up those duties until 23 years later, when the squad began hiring paid staff.

"She was treasurer of just about anything that came along around here," said a son, Michael Oechsner of Warsaw.

Mrs. Oechsner, of Warsaw, died Wednesday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital in Carrollton. She was 82.

She had a natural facility with numbers, said her son. She started working for the Gallatin County Board of Education as a secretary to the superintendent but eventually became the board's treasurer.

"She always did bookkeeping and secretarial work," said her son. "She didn't have any formal training. She just picked it up."

His mother was a positive person who had a good time helping others, Michael Oechsner said.

"She had 82 years, and I don't know anyone who had more fun," he said. "She was a very cheerful person who lifted the spirits of others wherever she was."

She was a member of the Warsaw Baptist Church. Her husband, Ernest Oechsner, preceded her in death.

Survivors in addition to her son include another son, William Oechsner of LaGrange; a daughter, JoAnn Oechsner of Hebron; brothers, Elbert Bowling of Louisville, Delbert Bowling and Paul W. Bowling, both of LaGrange; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Warsaw Cemetery.
