French Nobility. Count of Bar. He was the eldest son of Thibaut II and his second wife Jeanne de Toucy. When Jeanne de Navarra married Philippe de France it made the county of Bar adjacent to the French royal domain. As a reaction, he sided with Edward I and married his daughter Eleanor. Soon after, the war between France and England broke out and Henri joined the alliance of Flanders, Brabant, Austria, England and the German king in 1296. The two kings only supported the fight half-heartedly and Guy I de Flandre singed a peace treaty in October 1297. Henri was imprisoned by the French in 1299 and had to sign the Treaty of Bruges in 1301. He had to pay homage to Philipp for a large part of his lands. Afterwards, he made his way to Naples to assist Charles II of Naples against the invading forces of Emperor Friedrich II. He was wounded in a fight and died shortly after. He was first buried in San Genarro, but his men brought him back to Bar le Duc in the same year, where he was buried beside his father.
