Death of Woman Found at Tavern Being Investigated

Emporia police detectives today were continuing their investigation of the death of an 18-year-old rural Emporia woman.

The woman, Cheryl A. Levings, who lives on Route 4, was dead on arrival at Newman Memorial County Hospital at 10 p.m. Saturday, according to police.

Detectives said that Judy K. McAlister, 1402 Garfield St., told them that she found Miss Levings lying on a couch in a tavern, The Belfry, 409 Commercial St., at 9:48 p.m. Saturday and that Miss Levings was not breathing.

An autopsy was conducted Sunday but the results of chemical tests required to determine the cause of death will not be available for several days, police said. the time of death was estimated at between 9 and 10 p.m. Saturday. Police refused comment on reports that the death resulted from a drug overdose.

Preliminary investigation indicate that the woman had been in the Fireside Inn, 22 East Sixth Ave., earlier Saturday evening and that she had been taken from the tavern by friends at the request of management when she was unable to sit upright police said.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Chapel. They will be conducted by the Rev. J. Joyce Wilson, pastor of the Grace United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the cemetery in Sabetha.

Miss Levings, an employe[e] in the local Iowa Beef Processor's plant, had been a resident of Emporia since 1956. The daughter of Charles and Bernice Thompson Levings, she was born Aug. 2nd, 1955, in Horton. She was a graduate of Emporia High School and a member of the Grace United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her father who died May 3rd, 1962, and she is survived by her mother, of the home; two brothers, Richard, of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Bernard, Rt. 4, and several uncles and aunts.

Funeral services for Cheryl Ann Levings, Rt. 4, who died Saturday evening, were held Wednesday morning in Roberts-Blue-Barnett Chapel. They were conducted by the Rev. J. Joyce Wilson, pastor of the Grace Methodist Church. The soloist was Erwin Gile and the organist was Mrs. Robert Plummer. Personnel and employees of Sauder Industries attended the group.

Relatives who attended from out of town were Mr. And Mrs. Richard Levings, Marshalltown, Iowa; Tillie Moyer, Centralia, and Nita and Rita Smith, Ethel Seibert, Clifford Bumgarner, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Moyer and son John, and Messrs. And Mesdames N. D. Ward and Charles Thompson all of Topeka.

Graveside services were held in the cemetery in Sabetha. They were conducted by the Rev. Kirby Hayes, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Sabetha.
