Edward Linn Blaine was the 2nd son of Seattle's First Minister David Blaine, and his wife Catharine Paine Blaine, Seattle's first schoolteacher. His parents left Seattle for Oregon during the Indian uprisings. Edward attended Wesleyan University, to become a teacher, obtaining a master's degree in 1886. For several terms he taught school in New England.
Edward Blaine returned to Seattle in 1890. Upon arriving in Seattle, Edward declined a position of school principal to pursue business and civic activities. He joined the First Methodist church of Seattle where he served for many years as a board member. He continued to support and promote the church his entire life, as well as manage charitable organizations.
Edward's early business career involved in life and title insurance, a chemical company, and the construction company that built Seattle's Liberty Theater in 1914, and Neptune Theater in 1921.
His civic service included being a member of the Seattle City Council. During the years 1910-1913 and 1922-1931 he served as chairman of the Finance Committee where he was known as the "Watchdog of the Treasury".
For three decades he was board president of the Washington Children's Home Society. Upon his retirement in 1947 he was awarded a citation in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the care of homeless children. He was considered honorary president from 1947 until his death.
A great supporter of education, he served on the Seattle School Board. Edward served as trustee for the College of Puget Sound [University of Puget Sound], for more than 36 years. He was instrumental in obtaining funds for the new college. In recognition of his services, the college awarded him an honorary doctor-of-law degree in 1947.
His last 12 years he held the position of manager, superintendent and board member of the Seattle Goodwill Industries.
Edward Linn Blaine held a conviction that history is best told by those that lived it. With this conviction, in 1932, Edward completed the transcription of his parents many letters home from Seattle during their early pioneer days. He published the letters and placed them into the Seattle Public Library and donated the originals to the University of Washington.
On June 23, 2014 Japanese American members of the Seattle United First Methodist Blaine Memorial Church came together to share memories and stories about WWII. Japanese American were removed from their homes, forced to give up their property and live in internment camps. They entrusted their property to Edward Linn Blaine, he kept their land for them. Edward Blaine was also involved in establishment of the Catharine Paine school for Japanese girls.
