Joseph Anthony "Happy Joe" Kunz, 56, passed away on November 1, 2014, All Saints Day, surrounded by family and cherished friends. Happy Joe was born on Galveston Island on December 19, 1957, the sixth of ten children, to Jerome and Carol Kunz. As a small child, his perpetual smile and ever bubbly attitude earned him his nickname, which would stick with him throughout his life and made him a favorite of many friends, teachers and his Granny Ruth. His quick wit kept everyone laughing, and he bought joy into any room. Joe also held a strong faith in God which sustained him to the end.

A BOI and lifelong Galveston resident, Joe attended St. Patrick's and O'Connell schools. He relished the Island's nightlife, working in the night club industry for many years. He and his dear friend and business partner, Rudy Betancourt, opened the original Pressbox in 1989. He will be greatly missed by the many friends he made in the business as well as in his other jobs over the years at Village Hardware, Lipton Tea, Wal-Mart and Palms Liquor. He was employed by the Port of Galveston at the time of his death.

Preceded in death by his mother, Carol Kunz, Happy Joe is survived by his father, Jerome Kunz, Sr.; his siblings: Jerri Kunz and husband, John McCullough; Judy Kunz and partner, Perry Turnbow; Jerome "Boonie" Kunz, Jr. and wife, Karen; John Kunz; James Kunz and wife, Carla; Jeannie Kunz Janota and husband, Mike; Jeff Kunz; Jennifer Kunz Gehrke and husband, John; and Jason Kunz and wife, Nikki; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and most cherished friends, Bubba and Dewitt Dunn.

Visitation will begin at 3:00 pm, Wednesday, November 5th, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 35th & Broadway, with a rosary at 5:00 pm and a memorial service following the rosary. Our family invites all of you who have been touched by Joe's infectious smile and unending kindness to join us for a celebration of his life following the service in the St. Patrick's Auditorium.

Honorary pallbearers are Bubba Dunn, Dewitt Dunn, Rudy Betancourt, Steve Booth, Roland Dablo and Max Clark.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Cancer Society.
