Edison was born to Jay and Freda Ausman Appleford. He was the oldest of three children.

He grew up on the family farm on Montgomery Ridge, east of Anatone, and attended grade school on Montgomery Ridge. He rode his horse to school every day. Later, his folks moved to Anatone so Edison and his brother and sister could go to school there. During his high school years, he stayed with his uncle Nick and aunt Glady Ausman, graduating in 1938 from Asotin High School.

Upon graduation he worked on the family farm, went to business school and also worked at the aluminum plant in Spokane, before entering the U.S. Navy in January 1942. While in the Navy, Edison was a cook stationed in the Philippine Islands. He was discharged in December 1945.

He met Mary B. Mellott in Asotin, and they were married Dec. 26, 1948, in Spokane. Mary passed away May 3, 2006.

Edison and Mary farmed on Montgomery Ridge from 1948 to 1991, where they raised wheat and cattle. In 1991, they retired and moved to Asotin.

Edison was a life member of the Lewiston Elks.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, parents, sister Kathryn Kiesecker and brother Donny Appleford.
