Jane Hibbard Hutchinson was born in Stroud, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Charles Hutchinson and Edith Thomas. When she was just seven years old she traveled by train with her mother, Edith, to Arizona. At that time Edith Thomas Hutchinson was suffering from "consumption" (tuberculosis) so they went to Oak Creek Canyon where it was hoped she would be able to recover. She was nursed by her sister, Kate Thomas, who lived in the canyon with their father, John L.V. Thomas. Sadly, Jane's mother was not to regain her health. Edith died July 17, 1910. Edith's body was shipped back to Oklahoma for burial, but young Jane was to stay in Oak Creek Canyon where she would be raised by Aunt Kate.

It was in that canyon she met Frank L. Pendley who was a near neighbor. They were to marry when Jane turned 18. Frank was 44. Together they raised 9 children and established an apple orchard which still produces fruit to this day. Their homestead would later become Slide Rock State Park, a place where their many descendants continue to gather to remember them.

Frank died in 1954 when Jane was just 51. She remained a widow until her death at the Pioneer Home in Prescott, AZ twenty five years later.

Jane had left instructions for her body to be donated to science at the University of Arizona in Tucson. However, she was cremated. Her ashes were interred at the site of her husband's grave in Flagstaff, AZ.
