Agnes was the 11th of 13 children born to Aban Swabacher and Luisa Gallegos. She was baptized Ignacia Swabacher. When she was 16 her older sister, Silveria, died of the Spanish flu. As a result, her parents took in her young niece and nephew and moved to Colorado. She met and married her first husband, Filomeno Chavez (aka Phil Shaff) in Pueblo, CO in 1924. Phil and Agnes had 5 known children: Philip Jr, Lawrence Charles, William "Billy" Roy, Jacqueline, Phyllis before their divorce in 1939. Agnes placed two children for adoption in 1938. She remarried in the early 1940s to Earl Vernon Scott and had another child.
