Phil Sr was born Filomeno Chaves to Manuel Telesfor Chaves and Donaciana Chavez. After his father was placed in the Las Vegas New Mexico Insane Asylum in 1917, Phil, his mother and siblings moved to Colorado. They lived first in La Junta, then Pueblo where he met his first wife, Agnes Swabacher. They married in 1924 and had 7 children before divorcing in 1939. Phil married three more times: in 1946 to Clara Coffman, in about 1953 to Isabel Garcia and in about 1959 to Mercedes Manjarres. He drove for Greyhound Bus for many years. He was forced into retirement when he got lost with a busload of passengers. He died in Chatsworth, CA in 1981
