David Lawrence Finley, age 52, of Rio Rancho, NM, passed away at home on October 23, 2014, after decades of struggle with disability and chronic illness.
David is survived by his brother, Bill Finley and his wife, Barbara Finley, his brother, Jim Finley and his wife, Jan Loeb, his aunt Mary Gleasman, his cousin, Cathy Gleasman and her husband, Robert Lovato, his cousin, Lynn Hutchinson and her husband, Michael Hutchinson, his nephew, Chris Finley and his fiancée, Sara Johnson, his nephew, Isaac Booth and his wife, Leslie Booth, his nephew, Jeffery Finley and his fiancée, Michaela, his niece, Jessica Hernández, his nephew, Joshua Smith and his wife, Megan Smith, his niece, Roxxanne Smith, his niece, Yolanda Smith, many great-nephews and great-nieces, friends around the world and his beloved companion dogs, Duchess and Babe.
Dave was a retired Marine and disabled veteran. Dave was a deeply religious man who lived his spiritual values. His generosity touched many lives. After injuries left him paraplegic and ended his military service while still a young man, Dave continued serving his country and community, volunteering in programs helping newly disabled veterans and disabled children see beyond the limitations of their injuries.
Dave had many interests and accomplishments. Dave became a skilled self-taught musician and composer and built a music studio in his home. Dave learned to fly an airplane with hand controls, got his pilot's license, and enjoyed traveling around the United States by small plane, visiting friends in different parts of the country.
Dave lived in Puerto Rico for over a decade. Several years ago he returned to New Mexico, where he grew up, to be near his family.
His health deteriorated over the years, including the loss of a leg, and he was often in severe pain, but he always stayed as independent as he could, facing his challenges with courage, faith, and a sharp sense of humor.
Dave never feared death. If anyone asked whether he was a believer, he would say, "I don't believe, I know."
At long last our brother, uncle, and friend is at peace, free of all his pain and limitations. Whenever we see someone rising above problems that seem overwhelming, physical or otherwise, we'll think of you, Dave. When we face our own struggles, your life will be an example of how it's done.
We miss you, but we're glad you aren't hurting any more. You're probably out for a run right now.
Dave's family and friends will hold a memorial at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 9, 2014, at Bernalillo United Methodist Church, 136 Calle Don Andres, Bernalillo, NM. His ashes will be interred at Santa Fé National Cemetery, Santa Fé, NM on Tuesday, November 18, 2014.
