Abner Bishop was born June 1, 1786, according to his gravestone, and likely in Virginia. It is also not known who his parents were, but there is genetic evidence that Elijah Bishop was his brother. Howell Bishop, born in 1780, may have been an older brother as well.

He is likely the Abner Bishop who served with Davy Crockett during the War of 1812. U.S. War of 1812 Service Records show that an Abner Bishop served as a Private in RUSSELL'S SEPARATE BATT'N, MTD. GUNMEN, TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS under MAJOR JOHN CHILES from September/October 1814 - May 1815. Abner would have received Land as compensation for his service, and his daughter, Julia A. Bishop was born in 1812-13 in Tennessee .

By 1820, Abner was in Franklin County (later, Lawrence County) Alabama farming beside Elijah. On 4/15/1825 Abner Bishop was granted 80 acres in Lawrence County Township 005S-Range 006W Aliquots W1/2SW14 Section 26.

On August 1, 1839, Abner Bishop purchased 80 acres in 1 W½NW HUNTSVILLE Township 5S Range 6W Section 27. His new son-in-law, Jesse J. Montgomery, bought adjoining land that same year, so his daughter Julia was close.

Abner died on September 4, 1843, in Lawrence, Alabama. He is buried in Kelly Cemetery.
