Frederick Adkins Calhoun
Fred Calhoun died at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Mann at Los Altos, California, April 25th. He passed his 85th birthday on the 29th of January, 1941. Mr. Calhoun had returned with his daughters to the Coast after they were here on a visit at Christmas time. He usually made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Edward Van Gorp here in Pella.

Frederick Adkins Calhoun, the son of Thomas Jefferson Calhoun and Elizabeth Jane Foster, was born in Kokoma, Indiana. When he was eight years of age he came with the family to make his home on a farm a mile and one-half west of Pella, long known as the Henry Dieleman farm and later as the Van Gorp Dairy Farm. In 1865 the family moved to Pella and Mr. Calhoun has lived here continuously since. He was for many years engaged in the buying of livestock and in early days often went to Texas to gather herds which he brought to this area to be fattened, sometimes being away three months on such a trip.

On the 19th of August, 1884, he married Charlotte Rebecca Beers (Beer) and to them three children were born, all of whom survive. They are Pearl, Mrs. Ed Van Gorp of Pella, Hazel, Mrs. D. H. Mann of Los Altos, Calif., and Madeline, Mrs. George Smith of Ukiah, California. Mrs. Calhoun died in February of 1903. In February of 1920 he married Alice Grant. She died in 1933, after which Mr. Calhoun made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Ed Van Gorp.

Fred Calhoun served as City Marshall in the '90's and for many years as constable. He also was a member of the Pella fire department.

No definite arrangements had been made to bring the remains to Pella on Tuesday due to the illness of both Mrs. George Smith and of Mr. D. H. Mann.
