Charles was the first child born to Nathan and Hattie Goldfoot. His parents had married in Council, Idaho, a little mining town in the mountains, where Hattie's sisters were living with their husbands. After his birth, his mother took him on the train to Portland, where the family now lived. He went to Failing Grade School and because his father died when he was abt five years old, he and his little brother Meshke (Maurice) sold newspapers on the streets and brought home the money to their mother. He went to Commerce High, and married Helen Hochfeld in 1929 in Portland. Then they moved to Grand Coulee, Washington where her parents had a department store. He died there at an early age from smoking.
