Death of Mr. Finley.
Azro Austin Finley, who was born in Bethel, November 25, 1825,
died here Sept. 17, after a long and painful illness, the effects of
two shocks. He was the son of William and Gracia (Billing) Finley.
When a child his parents moved to Hartland, where he lived until he
came to Danville in 1859, except for one or two years spent in Taftsville,
where he run a sawmill. In his youth he attended a high school in
Claremont, N.H. Later he worked at the carpenter's trade and various
other pursuits, and on coming to Danville he bought the John Pope farm,
where he has since resided.
He was twice married. In 1853 he married Mary M. Pope of North Danville.
Three children were born to them, two dying in infancy. In 1876 he married
Ellen M. Lackey of Sheffield, who died in 1897.
He was one of a building committee of six when the Free Baptist church
was built at this place and subscribed $100 toward it. He was chorister
for a time after the church was built. He is survived by one daughter,
Mrs. Alice Chickering, and two grandsons, A. Carlton and A. Merton
Chickering, and one brother, Horace H. Finley of Hartland.
Funeral services were held at the Free Baptist church, Thursday, at
1 o'clock, Rev. B. P. Parker, officiating. The interment was at Mount
Pleasant cemetery, St. Johnsbury.
