JACOB DESCHLER, was born 19 Feb 1834 in the tiny village of “Mühlhofen, Canton of Bergzabern, Region of Landau in the Pfalz, Kingdom of Bavaria.” Jacob's father, Johann Friedrich Deschler, dutifully walked to Jacob Windrig’s office, the Burgermeister, the next day to report the birth.

Today this is in the German Federal State of Rheinland-Pfalz, but we must remember there was NO “Germany” in 1834; it wasn’t until 1871 that the German Empire was created.

[In 2014, the house in which Jacob was born was still in Mühlhofen, which has been annexed by the larger Billigheim-Ingenheim. In 2014, the address of the “Deschler” house was Oberdorfstraße 37, 76831 Billigheim-Ingenheim, Bundesrepublik Deutschland / Federal Republic of Germany.]

Unlike six of Jacob’s sibling who immediate came to America upon reaching adulthood, Jacob stayed in Mühlhofen. On 31 Jul 1862, Jacob married MAGDALENA JOHANNES in the “Evangelisch-Reformierte, Ingenheim, Pfalz of Bavaria. Magdalena had been born in Sep 1830 in “Ingenheim, Rheinland-Pfalz, Bavaria,” to Michael Johannes and Catharina Illy, who had her baptized on 19 Sep 1830 in Ingenheim.

Virtually nothing is known of Jacob Deschler’s married life the Rhineland-Pfaltz. Their first child, Wilhelm Deschler was born Mühlhofen, Rhineland-Pfaltz, Bavaria on 28 Mar 1863, his christening record says, “Evangelische Kirche, Billigheim, Pfalz, Bavaria” on 06 Apr 1863. (Note: This Wilhelm would later come to America and pass away sometime after 1930 in San Francisco, San Francisco Co., CA).

Then Jacob’s wife, Magdalena, gave birth to a girl, Eva Deschler, on 2 May 1866 in Mühlhofen, Pfalz of Bavaria. Eva was christened on 21 May 1866 in “Evangelische Kirche, Billigheim, Pfalz, Bavaria.” High infant mortality was something that all family’s lived with in the mid-1800’s, but that still didn’t make it any less painful. The child, Eva Deschler died, just short of her third birthday on 16 Mar 1869 in “Mühlhofen, Rhineland-Pfaltz, Bavaria,” and is presumed to be buried there. No other children of theirs are known.

About 1883, Jacob’s wife, MAGDALENA JOHANNES died in Mühlhofen, Rhineland-Pfaltz and is presumed buried there.

For some reason, our Jacob Deschler knew it was time for a change – time for him to join his 5 siblings who had earlier come to America. Jacob, now 50, and his son Wilhlem, then 20, packed up what belongings they could carry and headed for the port of Bremen, Germany, 354 miles. In Sep 1883 the boarded the ship “Rhein," and after a stop in Southampton, England arrived in New York City on 29 Sep 1883. On the ship’s manifest both were listed as “Laborers” with in ID No. of 37481.

Jacob, and his son, made their way to the Covington, KY – Cincinnati, OH area. The Cincinnati City Directory of 1884 (based on data from 1883) shows Jacob and his son sharing a room at 499 Vine St in Cincinnati. Like his brother Andreas, Jacob’s occupation is listed as “Cabinet Maker.” By 1890, Jacob is living with his brother Wilhelm Deschler, who had been born on 12 Dec 1841, at Taylor Mill Road near Ferry, Milldale, Kenton Co., KY, a southern suburb of Covington at that time. In 1895 he is living at 186 Robins Ave., Cincinnati, OH. And by 1906 Jacob is again living with his younger brother Wilhelm at 613 Main, Latonia, KY, also a southern suburb of Covington. Unlike his younger brother’s Jacob did not prosper in America. In early 1913, while living still living with his brother, Jacob is sick enough to be admitted to Covington’s St. Elizabeth Hospital, and there he passed away on Thursday morning, 24 Jan 1913. The funeral was held “Monday morning [Jan 27th] at 10 a.m. at Allison & Yates Chapel” and Jacob Deschler was laid to rest in the Deschler plot in Highland Cemetery., Fort Mitchell, Kenton Co., KY.
