Rev. Robert Virgil Keaton, 79, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, at his home in Dillwyn, Va.

Born Nov. 16, 1934 to Herbert and Lula Keaton, Robert served in the U.S. Air Force, from which he was honorably discharged in 1960. Returning to West Virginia, he received ordination as a minister from the Hotchkiss Missionary Baptist Church on July 20, 1969. He served as pastor of several West Virginia churches during his career: the Stanaford Missionary Baptist Church, Hollywood Missionary Baptist Church in MacArthur, First Baptist Church of Petersburg, Central Baptist Church in Hinton and Ansted Missionary Baptist Church. He returned to First Baptist Church of Petersburg, from which he retired. During his retirement he served as interim pastor of several area churches. Robert received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree in 1981 from the Clarksville School of Theology in Clarksville, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Henry Keaton, Basil Keaton and Roy Keaton, and by his sisters, Edna Birchfield and Violet Wood.

Robert truly loved his family and is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shirley Canada Keaton, and his four children, Russell Keaton and wife, Susie, Giles Keaton and wife, Karen, Lenora Bell and Wanda Hoerman and husband, Gary. He and Shirley were blessed with nine grandchildren, Daniel Keaton, Robert Keaton, Leah Harper, Janice Williams, Kara Wallace, Marion Robinson, Anita Olejnik, Andrew Roland and Amanda Roland; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by brothers, Elvin Keaton and Larry Keaton; sisters, Ethel Birchfield and Helen Beech; and by numerous other extended family members.

Friends may visit with family from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at Rose & Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, at Crab Orchard Baptist Church, Crab Orchard.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Daniel Keaton, Robert Keaton and Andrew Roland, and nephews, Kenneth Birchfield, Daniel Keaton and Josh Birchfield. Interment will be at Lilly Crews Cemetery, Nimitz.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Crab Orchard Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 466, Crab Orchard, WV 25827, or to Chestnut Grove Baptist Church, 1134 Andersonville Road, Dillwyn, VA 23936.
