Bland, Joan Bakewell Chouteau Joan Bakewell Chouteau Bland died on Sunday, October 19, 2014. She was born September 5, 1922 in St. Louis, a daughter of Edward L. and Mildred A. Bakewell. In 1952 she married Auguste Chouteau, 10th generation of the city's founders, who died in 1990. In 1995 she married Richard Bland, who died in France in 1997. Mrs. Bland graduated from Villa Duchesne in 1941. In World War II she worked with Army Ordinance. For many years she was a volunteer with St. Ann's Home for the Elderly, the Humane Society, and the Animal Protective Association. She loved sports and was always interested in flying, having held a student pilot license. Her sister, Nancy Bakewell Altvater survives, in addition to numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are her brothers, Rev. Anderson Bakewell SJ, Alexander McNair Bakewell, Edward L. Bakewell, Jr., Nicholas Bakewell, Peter Bakewell, and her sister, Mildred Muckerman. Surviving step-children are Christy Chouteau, Richard Bland, Jr., Robert Bland, Timothy Bland, John Bland, Peter Bland, David Bland, Peggy Cloherty, Mary Richards and Rita Bland. A special thank you to her caregivers, including Marsha Parker, Lillian Moon, and Shelia Newburn. Finally she is survived by her beloved dog, Terry. Services: A private family service will be conducted at THE LUPTON CHAPEL in University City. Private interment Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials appreciated to the Humane Society of Missouri or to the charity of one's choice.
