Wichita -- Father Vincent Rohr, 59, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 1995 at Wichita, he had been ill for nearly three years.

He was born Sept. 28, 1936 at Munjor, the son of Lawrence and Katherine Doerfler Rohr.

He received his elementary education at St. Francis School, Munjor, Jefferson School, Hays; his studies for the priesthood were at St. Francis Seminary, Victoria, St. Fidelis College, Herman, Pa., and Capuchin College, Washhington, D.C.; he earned his master’s degrees in religious education and philosophy at Capuchin College and Catholic University, then he pursued postgraduate studies in philosophy at Harvard and doctoral studies at Notre Dame University.

He entered the Capuchin Order at Annapolis, Md., in 1956 and was ordained a priest in 1962. He taught philosophy at St. Fidelis College from 1964 to 1968 and 1970 to 1974, and during the 1960s and 1970s was active in the U.S. Catholic charismatic movement.

He was elected to the provincial council of the Capuchin Province of Penn. in 1974, and he became coordinator of ministries and continuing education for the province. He was known in the Hays area as president of Thomas More Prep-Marian from 1983-1985 and chaplain of the Comeau Catholic Campus Center, Fort Hays State Univ., 1985-1990.

He was archdiocesan minister for priests of the archdiocese of Kansas City, Kan., from 1990-1992, provincial vocation director from 1991-1992, and provincial archivist 1992-1994. He also served as advocate for priests of the diocese of Salina from 1989-1990. He became the North
American Capuchin Conference’s first executive secretary in 1983, an office he held until his health forced him to resign in 1994.

He was a charter member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 10, 2011, Fort Hays State University.

Survivors include six brothers, Elmer, Goodland, Gilbert, Garden city, Floyd, Hays, Walter, Orange Park, Fla., Vernon, Wichita, and LeRoy, Height Town, N.J.; two sisters, Esther Ruder and Ruth Pfeifer, both of Hays; and many nephews and nieces.

Scipture service will be at 7:30 p.m. today at Hays Memorial Chapel, 20th and Pine, Hays, and a vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral chapel and 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 8:45 a.m to 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be the Friar’s plot in the church cemetery.
