He is the son of William Richard Venable (1826-1873) and Sarah Cornelia Hoyt (1834-1916). He served for thirty years as Deputy Clerk of Fulton Superior Court, entering the office when his father was Clerk in 1873.
His father was Clerk during the Civil War and saved all the Fulton County records from fire during Sherman's "March to the Sea", by refugeeing with them to his old home in Jefferson, Jackson County, Georgia.
He attended and graduated from the Military College at Dahlonega. As a graduate lawyer, served as justice of the peace, and was a member of the Atlanta Bar Association.
