Mr. Vernon Gene Bateman, 72, passed away on Sunday, August 26, 2012. The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p. m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Pinewood Memorial Park. Mr. Bateman, son of the late B. L. and Edna Joyner Bateman, was a native of Pitt County and a member of Bell Arthur Methodist Church. He was employed with Burroughs-Wellcome for over 28 years. His passions in life were spending time with his family, playing with his grandchildren and yardwork. He was preceded in death by two brothers, B. L. Bateman, Jr. and George H. Bateman. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Linda Baker Bateman;son, Gene Bateman and wife, Melinda, of Simpson;daughter, Glenda Whitehurst and husband, Ralph, of Greenville; grandchildren, Sarah Bateman, Blake Whitehurst, Cody Bateman and Shane Whitehurst; brother, Henry Bateman and wife, Ruth of Greenville; and many nieces and nephews and special friends. The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home Tuesday from 6 ? 8 p.m. and other times at the home of his daughter, Glenda Whitehurst, 3841 Ivy Road, Greenville, NC 27858.
